White House responds to reports Trump is going to give himself a big, beautiful birthday present

The White House responded to reports that President Donald Trump wants a military parade on the Army’s 250th anniversary, which also happens to be his birthday.

On Sunday, The Washington City Paper reported that Trump has “lusted after a big military parade over which he could preside—just like he sees leaders do in other mostly authoritative countries.” The outlet described him as “angrily and reluctantly” canceling an event in 2018 for reasons relating to the price and infrastructure concerns.

Responding to the report, the White House stated simply that “no military parade has been scheduled.”

Washington D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser stated that a parade had been pitched to the local government, but could not confirm whether it was a “military parade.”

“I don’t know if it’s been characterized as a military parade, but maybe it has; I haven’t been directly involved in it yet. I understand that I think it was Homeland Security, maybe the White House reached out to our special events taskforce, which is what most people wanting to do a parade to in the District,” the mayor said. “So I would say that it’s at its early stages, yes they have reached out, I don’t know if it’s being characterized as a military parade.”

The reporter asking about the parade mentioned previous infrastructure concerns to Bowser, including worries that heavy machinery like a tank would tear up the roads.

“Yeah, military tanks on our streets would not be good. If military tanks were used they should be accompanied by many millions of dollars to repair the roads,” she suggested.

Arlington County Board Chair Takis Karantonis discussed the matter with the City Paper, saying that he hopes “the federal government remains sensitive to the pain and concerns of numerous [military] veteran residents who have lost or might lose their jobs in recent federal decisions, as they reflect on how best to celebrate the Army’s anniversary.”
