Tuesday evening saw the usual Westminster crowd gather for the annual Pagefield Awards, hosted by Labour Together’s Jonathan Ashworth and sponsored by MessageSpace. Health Secretary Wes Streeting was crowned Frontbench MP of the Year – an award he also won last year. In a video speech from his Department of Health office, Streeting took the opportunity to poke fun at Matt Hancock for that infamous CCTV moment before launching into a heartfelt monologue on the NHS:

“You may know it from a notorious piece of CCTV. But it is the honour of my life to be stood here in this office. The NHS saved my life when I went through kidney cancer. I can’t think of anything better than working to save our National Health Service. Whilst I am grateful to the judges, the real prize is still ahead, which is to deliver that change and that legacy. The best is yet to come.”

Elsewhere, Kim Leadbeater picked up Political Speech of the Year for her Commons contribution on assisted dying while Channel 4’s Cathy Newman scooped Scoop of the Year for her long-running investigation on John Smyth’s abuse and her interview with Justin Welby’s ahead of his resignation. Political Journalist of the Year went to Caroline Wheeler for her work on the infected blood scandal. Congratulations to the winners…
