VP Vance’s Wife Usha Pushes Back on MAGA Stereotypes With Class

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Usha Vance, the wife of Vice President JD Vance, addressed questions about fitting into the cultural aesthetics of “MAGA Land” during a recent interview with the Free Press, as reported by The New York Post.

When asked how she feels about being an Indian American woman in a political scene often characterized by “blondes and Botox,” Vance responded with humor and grace.

“I’m laughing, because it would be really hard for me to be blonde … that color would look totally absurd,” said Vance, 39. She added that she prefers to leave her hair in its natural state and emphasized that the Republican Party has welcomed her without judgment.

“For what it’s worth, my reception into this world — and I’m not from a particularly wealthy background, not from a very fashion-oriented background personally or professionally — has been really positive. People don’t seem to care all that much what I look like.”

The second lady, who is the first Hindu woman to hold the position, became a prominent figure in conservative circles after her husband was chosen by President Donald Trump as his running mate during the 2024 campaign.

Since the election, she has transitioned from her legal career into a role that has brought more public attention to her personal life.

“The day before JD was selected — I did not know he was going to be selected — I was working as a lawyer, and I had the wardrobe of a person with three children who likes to do things outdoors, who has a dog, who doesn’t like things to be too precious,” she said.

“And then, a switch flipped, and it’s not like it came with a whole new wardrobe and stylist and everything.”

Born and raised in San Diego, Vance grew up in a Hindu household after her parents immigrated from India in the 1970s. Her mother, a biologist and provost at the University of California at San Diego, and her father, an engineer, emphasized education and perseverance.

She went on to attend Yale University and later earned the prestigious Gates Cambridge Scholarship, which allowed her to study at the University of Cambridge.

She returned to Yale for law school, where she met JD Vance during a class assignment. The couple married in 2014 in Kentucky and now have three children.

As her husband takes on his responsibilities in the White House, Vance serves as one of his closest confidants. She described the experience as both rewarding and difficult.

“I don’t know that he’s asking me for advice so much as, it can be a very lonely, lonely world not to share with someone,” she said.

“It’s a very strange life that we lead, where there are lots of people who have just imagined all sorts of narratives about us and what we think and what we do and why we do it and how much planning goes into it and all these sorts of things.”

On March 13, the couple attended a concert at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C., where they were met with boos from the audience.

The event occurred shortly after President Trump removed several members of the Kennedy Center board and appointed himself as chairman.

Despite the challenges that come with political life, Usha Vance said her top priority remains protecting her children from the hostility of the public spotlight.

“To me, the highest priority right now is to be actually a normal person.”
