Soon after President Nicolás Maduro reached an agreement with the U.S., nearly 200 illegal migrants were deported to Venezuela.
Maduro had suspended flights returning deported nationals from the South American country after the Treasury Department pulled Chevron’s license for exporting Venezuelan oil. This weekend, Jorge Rodríguez, president of Venezuela’s Assembly, announced the country had reached an agreement with the Trump administration and would resume accepting the deportees.
“We have agreed with the U.S. government to resume the repatriation of Venezuelan migrants with an initial flight tomorrow, Sunday,” Rodríguez said.
A Department of Homeland Security official told NewsNation that a plane with 199 people on board landed Monday in Venezuela.
“They said the group included members of Tren de Aragua, a gang the Trump administration has designated as a terrorist organization,” the outlet noted.

Rodríguez also noted that resuming accepting the nationals to Venezuela would guarantee “the return of our compatriots to their nation with the safeguard of their Human Rights.”
He also said efforts would be made to get the “brothers kidnapped in El Salvador” back to their home, referring to the more than 200 Venezuelans – many who were reportedly Tren de Aragua members – who were deported to a high-security prison in El Salvador.
“Migrating is not a crime and we will not rest until we achieve the return of all those who require it and until we rescue our brothers kidnapped in El Salvador,” Rodríguez said.
Maduro spoke of the resumed repatriation flights during an event on Sunday, saying, “We are resuming flights to rescue and release migrants from U.S. prisons.”
He also had a message for the president of El Salvador, Nayib Bukele, regarding the Venezuelans deported to his country.
“You guarantee their health and, sooner rather than later, you have to hand them over and release them because they are kidnapped,” Maduro said.
