UN Judge Found Guilty of Forcing Woman To Work as Slave

A United Nations judge has just been found guilty of forcing a young woman to work as her slave while studying law at Oxford University. Prosecutors told jurors at the Oxford Crown Court Lydia Mugambe – who’s also a High Court judge in Uganda – took “advantage of her status” over her victim in the “most egregious way” forcing her to work as her maid and to provide childcare for free. Prosecutor Caroline Haughey KC told the court during the trail:

 “Ms Mugambe used her knowledge, and her power, to deceive [her alleged victim] into coming to the UK, taking advantage of her naivety to induce and deceive her into working for her for nothing.”

The court also heard Mugambe – who was appointed to the UN’s judicial roster in May 2023 – had the intention of “obtaining someone to make her life easier and at the least possible cost to herself”. Mugambe was prosecuted under the UK’s Modern Slavery Act 2015. She’ll be sentenced on May 2…
