Trump to make two-day trip to Rome for funeral of Pope Francis

President Trump will depart Washington on Friday morning to attend Pope Francis’ funeral in Rome over the weekend, the White House confirmed Tuesday.

Mr. Trump will return to the U.S. on Saturday evening following the service for Francis, according to White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt.

The president said late Monday he planned to attend the funeral with his wife, first lady Melania Trump.

“We look forward to being there!” he wrote on Truth Social.

Francis, 88, died Monday from a cerebral stroke and subsequent heart failure.

The Vatican confirmed funeral plans the following day, allowing the White House to detail Mr. Trump’s travel.

Ms. Leavitt said the trip will be part of a busy round of foreign trips and talks for Mr. Trump in the coming days and weeks.

This week, Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre will visit the White House on Thursday.

“The two leaders will discuss trade and regional security,” Ms. Leavitt said. “This will be the 13th head of state visit of President Trump’s term.”

Looking ahead, Mr. Trump will visit Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates from May 13 to May 16, Ms. Leavitt said.

Mr. Trump established a close relationship with the Saudis and Gulf nations during his first term, particularly around economic development and investment.
