Trump to crank tariffs up to 50% for ‘biggest abuser’ China as they call him a big bully

The war of words rages between China and President Donald Trump, who is threatening to raise tariffs even further if the country refuses to drop its retaliatory measures.

China is not coping well with Trump’s America First agenda, with Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Lin Jian claiming the tariffs are “typical unilateral and protectionist bullying.” This comes after the United States president established an additional 34% tariff on top of the first two 10% tariffs from earlier in 2025.

“Pressure and threats are not the way to deal with China,” Lin Jian said. “China will firmly safeguard its legitimate rights and interests.”

Chinese Vice Minister of Commerce Ling Ji said the “root of the tariff problem is in the U.S.”

“We hope the American companies can address the problem at its root … issue reasonable statements, take concrete actions, and work together to safeguard the stability of the global supply chain.”

Meanwhile, Trump is refusing to back down and is threatening to ramp up tariffs to 50% if the country doesn’t remove the 34% retaliatory tariff it imposed against the United States.

“Yesterday, China issued Retaliatory Tariffs of 34%, on top of their already record setting Tariffs, Non-Monetary Tariffs, Illegal Subsidization of companies, and massive long term Currency Manipulation, despite my warning that any country that Retaliates against the U.S. by issuing additional Tariffs, above and beyond their already existing long term Tariff abuse of our Nation, will be immediately met with new and substantially higher Tariffs, over and above those initially set,” the president wrote in a Truth Social post.

“Therefore, if China does not withdraw its 34% increase above their already long term trading abuses by tomorrow, April 8th, 2025, the United States will impose ADDITIONAL Tariffs on China of 50%, effective April 9th. Additionally, all talks with China concerning their requested meetings with us will be terminated! Negotiations with other countries, which have also requested meetings, will begin taking place immediately. Thank you for your attention to this matter!”
