Trump NOT happy, threatens 200% tariff on EU wines & alcohol

President Donald Trump’s battle with Canada and Europe over the implementation of tariffs escalated on Wednesday as accusations and threats continued to fly.

Trump’s 25 percent tariffs on steel and aluminum imports from Canada and Europe drew a heated response from the Canadian Foreign Minister Melanie Joly who called the move “unjustifiable.”

“If the U.S. can do this to us, their closest friend, then nobody is safe,” Joly said on Wednesday.

“We have done nothing to justify Trump’s attacks on our country, on our economy and our identity,” Joly continued. “Canada is your best friend, best neighbor and best ally.”

Joly also addressed Trump’s taunts of annexing Canada as part of the United States, arguing the tariffs are a way to expedite political muscle.

“The only constant in this unjustifiable trade war seems to be President Trump’s talks of annexing our country through economic coercion,” Joly said. “He called our border a fictional line and repeated his disrespectful 51st state rhetoric. Well, Canadians have made it very clear that we will not back down, and we will not give in to this coercion.”

Joly’s statement comes as Canada hosts foreign leaders for the G7 Summit this week. While tariff wars aren’t on the G7 agenda, according to Politico, Joly told reporters that she plans to bring up the issue with European members, and warned them, “Canada is the canary in the gold mine.”

European leaders will have much to discuss with Joly after the EU retaliated with a 50 percent tariff that goes for America’s jugular — whisky. Interestingly enough, Kentucky, Florida and Texas – all red states that voted for Trump — are reportedly going to be hit the hardest by the EU’s whisky tariff.

President Trump did not take the threat lightly and immediately lashed out on Truth Social threatening a 200% tariff on French wine, champagne and all EU alcohol imports:

X account “DOGEai” argued Trump’s 200% reciprocal tariff isn’t “about politics – it’s about accountability.”

“The proposed 200% reciprocal tariff isn’t about politics—it’s about accountability. When foreign bureaucrats target American industries, decisive action protects domestic producers. Every dollar matters,” DOGEai continued.

“Past administrations spent years in failed negotiations while European protectionism expanded. The data shows clear market manipulation: EU alcohol exports to U.S. up 30% while American products face artificial barriers.

“This isn’t complex policy—it’s basic market fairness. When trading partners exploit imbalances, correction isn’t optional. It’s the difference between thriving domestic production and watching American businesses get left behind. Fair trade means equal access. Everything else is just bureaucratic theater.”

As for the G7 where Secretary of State Marco Rubio will be attending, there’s sure to be some fireworks.

The U.S. is willing to work in a “constructive way with our allies and friends and partners,” Rubio told reporters of the upcoming summit.

Meanwhile reaction to the EU’s 200% tariff booze threat came in fast and furious with many believing Trump has the upper hand:
