National Security Advisor Mike Waltz admitted Thursday that a peace deal between Ukraine and Russia would probably involve the former giving up the Russian separatist-populated Donbas region.
He made the admission after being asked during an appearance on Fox News’ “Hannity” to explain what a peace deal might end up looking like.
Listen:
“If I were to imagine how this deal unfolds, it’s gonna be the rare earth mineral deal, a component that keeps U.S. involvement and presence in Ukraine,” show host Sean Hannity said, beginning the discussion.
“Maybe European troops could be in Ukraine as well. I would imagine that Ukraine being a part of NATO is not gonna happen, and I would imagine that parts – maybe the Donbas region in particular or areas that are heavily populated by people from Russia – that would go to Putin in any negotiated settlement. Am I wrong in my conjecture here?”
According to Waltz, Hannity was not wrong.
“Sean, no surprise, you’re not wrong in any of that,” Waltz replied. “And what’s important is that we are discussing all of those things with both sides. We are having those discussions with our counterparts, with the Russians. We are having those discussions with our counterparts with the Ukrainians, and we are pushing both sides together with President Trump, the dealmaker-in-chief who is determined to end this war.”
Waltz’ sensible take — one that’s been accepted by everybody with common sense — immediately triggered shrill cries of anger and rage from the “Ukraine First” left.

America telling Ukraine what it gives up. America telling Russia potentially what it gets. America telling Canada that it should be the 51st state. America telling Greenland and Panama … and on and on. Who the hell made America boss. Trump. Prime example of arrogance.

Fuck this shit. Ukrainians in Donbass are not Russians. There is no large population of Russians in the Donetsk region. I was born in this region and my whole family too. We are Ukrainians and we do not want to be under Russian occupation. Fox is spreading Kremlin propaganda.

Yet as noted earlier, anybody with sense knows that Ukraine will have to hand over the Donbas region if it wants to end the ongoing war.
“There must be some kind of compromise — why do they expect the Russians to leave Crimea, Donbas and Luhansk,” Slovakian Prime Minister Robert Fico noted last year.
Mind you, Fico is and has always been a fierce critic of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy:
When you’re done putting up with crap:

This has to STOP”(Slovakia PM Robert Fico speaking about Zelensky) pic.twitter.com/17AivjNuBt

Even some top Ukrainian officials have admitted that regions like the Donbas are and have always been mainly populated with Russians.
“Ukraine can give up Donbass in exchange for peace. This is the territory of Ukraine, but the population is completely pro-Russian, the people there cannot be changed,” official Denis Desyatnik reportedly said two years ago.

The worry though is that if Ukraine hands over the Donbas in exchange for peace, Russia will just wait a few more years and then invade again.
But supporters of the idea of giving up the Donbas say that the mineral rights deal that President Donald Trump is seeking with Ukraine would ensure the country enjoys the protection of the U.S. going forward.
It is astonishing to me that nominally intelligent people fail to understand the purpose of the minerals deal: using American megacorps as human shields for Russian aggression creates a durable, *implicit* security guarantee without formalizing it in terms Putin can reject. https://t.co/tPiXjRXRiH
