On Sunday, former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy praised President Donald Trump for “having to be” both Speaker and president.
Fox News’s Trey Gowdy was speaking to McCarthy, asking the former speaker how he feels about the “so-called fiscal hawks said they’d never vote for what they just voted for,” a reference to the adoption of framework that will help the House Republicans implements some parts of the president’s agenda.
“How do you manage a group that rarely takes yes for an answer?” Gowdy asked.
“I’ll tell you, the difference is President Donald Trump. It was interesting what those would say, they wanted to look their own way. What that would have meant was, Americans would’ve got a tax increase, President Trump brought them into the Oval Office, they were able to pass instructions for the reconciliation bill. Now the hard part begins you can’t get President Trump enough credit, he’s not only the president he’s now having to be the speaker and run the house at the same time. I’ve never seen a president stronger, at this point in time, in Congress.
House Speaker Mike Johnson celebrated the winning vote, which passed by a narrow margin of 216-214.
“It was a good day in the House,” Johnson said. “I told you not to doubt us. The media always does. The Democrats always do. But we get the job done, and we’re really grateful to have had the big victory on the floor just now.”
