Trump Hits Back Hard—Fines Pile Up for Immigration Holdouts

The Trump administration has announced a new policy aimed at increasing pressure on illegal immigrants who have been issued final deportation orders, as reported by Fox News.

Beginning soon, those who refuse to leave the United States could face fines of $998 per day, according to officials from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

Former President Donald Trump poses at a campaign rally July 27 at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud, Minnesota. In his speech, Trump called on his supporters to flip the state red.

“Illegal aliens should use the CBP Home app to self-deport and leave the country now. If they don’t, they will face the consequences,” said DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin in a statement to Fox News on Tuesday.

“This includes a fine of $998 per day for every day that the illegal alien overstayed their final deportation order.”

The new enforcement measure is based on a 1996 federal law that was largely unenforced until 2018 during President Donald Trump’s first term.

According to a report from Reuters, which first broke the news, the fines may be applied retroactively up to five years, potentially amounting to more than $1 million in penalties per individual.

The administration is also exploring options to seize property from illegal immigrants who fail to pay the fines, according to the Reuters report.

A flyer obtained by Fox News Digital outlines the new program’s approach, highlighting both the incentives for voluntary departure and the penalties for noncompliance.

The flyer encourages illegal immigrants to utilize the CBP Home app to arrange their departure, presenting it as a safer and more controlled process.

“Self-deportation is safe. Leave on your own terms by picking your departure flight.”

The document also notes several advantages for those who choose to leave voluntarily, including the ability for non-criminal illegal immigrants to retain money earned while in the U.S., possible eligibility for subsidized airfare, and the opportunity to preserve eligibility for future legal immigration.

The consequences for ignoring a deportation order, however, are detailed in full. The flyer warns that DHS may apprehend individuals without allowing time to settle personal affairs.

It also outlines the potential fines, including $998 per day for ignoring final removal orders and an additional $1,000 to $5,000 fine for failing to depart after stating an intent to self-deport.

“If you fail to self-deport, you may be subject to jail time,” the flyer states. It adds that individuals who refuse to comply may also be “prohibited from reentering the U.S. through the legal immigration system.”

The administration’s move is part of a broader effort to enforce immigration law and reduce the number of illegal immigrants remaining in the country despite removal orders.
