President Trump on Monday gave his blessing to Tiger Woods’ romantic relationship with his former daughter-in-law Vanessa Trump.
The president also said that pressure from the Russia collusion investigation contributed to her split from his son, Donald Trump Jr.
“I’m very happy for both. I just want them both to be happy. Let them both be happy. They’re both great,” Mr. Trump told reporters in the Oval Office.
Earlier this month, Mr. Woods announced he was dating Vanessa Trump on social media. He posted pictures of Vanessa and himself, and he wrote, “Love is in the air and life is better with you by my side! We look forward to our journey through life together.”
Mr. Woods, who frequently golfs with Mr. Trump and has appeared at White House events, is known for being guarded about his personal life. Revelations of an extramarital affair in the 2000s ended his marriage to Swedish model Elin Nordegren, damaged his public image and impacted his playing career.
In 2019, Mr. Trump awarded Mr. Woods, who won 15 major championships, the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
Vanessa Trump was married to Donald Trump Jr. for 13 years before divorcing in 2018. The pair has five children together.
Mr. Trump said that the Justice Department’s investigation into false allegations his 2016 campaign plotted with Russian officials damaged his son’s marriage to Vanessa Trump.
“I happen to think the relationship was hurt very badly by the witch hunt that went on Russia, Russia, Russia and all the crap they put Don through, who knew nothing about it,” he said. “But Vaneesa and Don had a very good relationship. They have incredible children.”
Mr. Woods’ children attend the same school as Vanessa Trump’s children.
