Trump explains why nixing Daylight Savings is ‘hard to get excited about it’

President Donald Trump shared his thoughts on the long-held debate about changing clocks in America.

With many poised to “spring ahead” this weekend as daylight saving time prompts clocks to move forward by one hour, the president was asked his thoughts on the topic.

“Ok, are you ready? So, this should be the easiest one of all, but it’s a 50-50 issue,” Trump replied when asked by a reporter in the Oval Office on Thursday.

“And if something’s a 50-50 issue, it’s hard to get excited about it. I assumed people would like to have more light later. But some people want to have more light earlier because they don’t want to take their kids to school in the dark,” the president noted.

“It’s something I can do,” Trump said, “but a lot of people like it one way, a lot of people like it the other way. It’s very even. And usually, I find when that’s the case, what else do we have to do?”

Congress would have to approve any official moves to eliminate the clock changes but Trump has previously made it clear he is not a fan. Before being sworn in, he called daylight saving time “inconvenient,” and “very costly to our nation.”

“The Republican Party will use its best efforts to eliminate Daylight Saving Time, which has a small but strong constituency, but shouldn’t!,” Trump wrote on Truth Social back in December.

This week, Trump’s head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), Elon Musk, presented a poll on the issue.

“If daylight savings time change is canceled, do you prefer…”

With more than 25 million views, the post so far shows that more than 58% prefer to have “an hour later.”

Sen. Rick Scott (R-Fla.) is hoping to “lock the clock” with legislation he reintroduced in January.

“I’m excited to have President Trump back in the White House and fully on board to LOCK THE CLOCK so we can get this good bill passed and make this common-sense change that will simplify and benefit the lives of American families,” Scott said in a statement.

A new Gallup poll conducted in January shows the majority of Americans (54%) are not in favor of the ritual that began more than a century ago. The poll found that 40% of U.S. adults surveyed are in favor of daylight saving time.
