Despite many sectors of the economy improving, President Donald Trump is refusing to rule out the possibility of a recession.
Trump will be addressing several business leaders at a roundtable following concerns that his tariffs may spell bad news for American companies. In addressing the country’s economic woes to Fox Business host Maria Bartiromo, Trump did not completely rule out the possibility of a recession which he referred to as a “period of transition.
Watch:
“I hate to predict things like that,” he said when asked about a potential recession. “There is a period of transition because what we’re doing is very big. We’re bringing wealth back to America. That’s a big thing… it takes a little time, but I think it should be great for us.”
Trump remains optimistic despite concerns surrounding tariffs on Canada, Mexico and China.
Bartiromo noted that the Atlanta Federal Reserve is expected to see a -2.8% contraction in the first quarter, and Goldman Sachs believes the possibility of seeing a recession within the next 12 months is about 20%. JPMorgan remains slightly more pessimistic at 35%.
However, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick told NBC News’ “Meet the Press” that there is “no chance” Americans will be seeing a recession.
“There’s going to be no recession in America… no chance,” he confidently declared.
