Trump admin fires Navy Vice Admiral, senior NATO official who was flagged by Conservative org for wokeness

Over the weekend, senior NATO official Navy Vice Admiral Shoshana Chatfield was fired and speculation is flying fast and furious.

There has been no official word of what prompted Chatfield’s sacking and it is not clear whether it is related to President Donald Trump’s stance on NATO and the United States’s policy direction with the organization. According to the Associated Press, which cited officials, Adm. Christopher Grady reportedly called Chatfield to let her know that the administration was planning to go in another direction with her job. The officials say they believe that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth made the decision sometime last week, but it is unknown whether Trump had any say in the final choice.

Both Hegseth and Trump have been adamant about removing “wokeness” from the federal government and specifically the United States military. Conservative research organization American Accountability Foundation (AAF) sent out a letter to Hegseth in December that included a list of officials they recommended letting go over various actions and remarks from their pasts. On the list was Chatfield, who reportedly complained in 2015 that the House of Representatives was comprised of 80% males, saying “our diversity is our strength.”

Other names on the list included Air Force Col. Ben Jonsson, Navy Vice Admiral Jeffery Hughes and Air Force Maj. Gen. Elizabeth Arledge. According to the letter, Jonsson wrote an opinion piece in 2020 demanding his white colleagues “give a damn” and “address our blind spots around race.” Hughes reportedly spoke at a DEI summit in 2022 where he spoke on the importance of using the criteria to hire “exceptional talent.” Arledge was mentioned in the letter for allegedly woke social media posts including the sharing of articles such as “discussions of whiteness in org[anization] theory and the ways in which whiteness (verb) has become naturalized as the ideal in orgs.”

“Chatfield, a Navy helicopter pilot who also commanded a joint reconstruction team in Afghanistan, had been serving as one of the 32 representatives on NATO’s military committee. The panel is the primary source of military advice to the North Atlantic Council and NATO’s Nuclear Planning Group, according to NATO. It serves as the link between the political decision-makers and NATO’s military structure,” Fox News reported.
