Rayner: There Was No Safari
The DPM has just appeared on Tom Swarbrick’s show on LBC. Amid claiming that Matthew Pennycook wasn’t actually attacking Reeves and claiming the Labour government had achieved a “sweet spot” on tax (40% of GDP), Rayner defended her vanity trip to Ethiopia and Ghana:
“There was no personal safari holiday… I went to Ethiopia, I met the Prime Minister of Ethiopia, I did diplomatic conversations. I went and visited some of the schemes that we had that was humanitarian. My schedule was absolutely rampacked, full of work that I was doing on behalf of the UK government. There was no safari. I was working… I was working that whole time. It was never part of the programme.“
Swarbrick asked if she requested the safari and she said “No.” The Times may have something to say about that…
As Guido revealed so “rampacked” was her trip that Rayner had time to brief Labour activists back home on how to campaign for her union bill. Flights cost £20,151.52. It’s Rayner Air not Ryanair…
