The pace of Russian territorial gains into Ukraine has decreased in the first quarter of 2025, with the Kremlin’s forces likely having seized about 55 square miles in March, British military analysts said over the weekend.
Moscow’s rate of advance has dropped month by month since November 2024, when Russian forces seized more than 270 square miles of Ukrainian territory. Most of the advances in March occurred in the central Donetsk oblast, but Russia has failed to improve its operational position, U.K. military officials posted on X.
“Ukrainian forces also carried out tactical counter-attacks, reversing some of Russia’s gains around Pokrovsk,” officials said.
British officials said Moscow’s military advance rate slowed through much of March 2025. They began to increase toward the end of the month but haven’t resulted in a higher rate of advance.
