‘The Evidence Is Overwhelming’: RFK Jr. Calls On CDC To Stop Recommending Fluoride

Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. called on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to stop recommending community water fluoridation during a Utah stop on his MAHA tour Monday.

“Fluoride should not be in our water,” Secretary Kennedy told a crowd in Utah after the state became the first to officially ban water fluoridation statewide.

Kennedy has long been a strong proponent of ending water fluoridation, promising voters during his 2024 presidential campaign that as president he would end the practice. Now, as the nation’s top health authority, he is taking steps to do just that. (RELATED: RFK Jr. Wants Fluoride Out Of Water — And It’s Not Nearly As Crazy As His Detractors Claim)

Kennedy continued to outline the dangers of fluoride in his speech, claiming there is “zero systemic advantage” for consuming the chemical for dental health. He argued that topical application is fine but not consumption through public water systems.

“The evidence against fluoride is overwhelming,” Kennedy continued. “We know that it causes IQ loss, profound IQ loss … the more fluoride you get … the more likely it is you lose IQ.”

He also said consumption has been linked to kidney and liver damage, hypothyroidism and osteoarthritis.

“It makes no sense to have it in our water supply, and I’m very very proud of this state for being the first state to ban it and I hope many more will come,” he concluded.

Pro-fluoride advocates disagree with his assessment, claiming the mineral is vital for dental health and poses no risk.

A National Toxicology Program (NTP) meta-analysis, however, found a decrease in childhood IQ directly correlated to elevated fluoride consumption.

“I think that there is sufficient data now, largely from the epidemiological literature in multiple populations, done by different investigators, that early life exposure to fluoride is associated with an increased risk of IQ loss,” Dr. Linda Birnbaum, the former director of the NTP, previously told the Daily Caller.

After Kennedy’s speech, he told the Associated Press (AP) he would be telling the CDC to stop recommending fluoridation. He also said he’s assembling a task force to make new recommendations.

The sea change follows an Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announcement that they will also review fluoride.

The current EPA-recommended standard for fluoride of 4.0 mg/L is well above the 1.5 mg/L that the NTP found with “moderate confidence” leads to decreased IQs.
