Starmer has killed off (again) a tradition started by Ramsay McDonald of Cabinet ministers donating a book to the Prime Ministerial library. There are two large bookcases in the Cabinet Room in Downing Street – since 1931 departing ministers donated a page-turner to it. Blair killed the tradition, Boris revived it, now Starmer has ended it again…

Tory ministers donated interesting volumes in the last government. A parliamentary question now reveals no donations have been made to the Prime Minister’s Library since the election, despite the frontbench changing since then. By the terms of the tradition Lou Haigh should have donated a tome to the collection. Oliver Twist?

Anneliese Dodds (who attended Cabinet meetings) might have got a book in there if she insisted. There is no friend as loyal as a book – the same can’t be said for Keir…
