WATCH: Starmer Finally Backs Own Fiscal Rules
Starmer spoke to Robert Peston today, who asked whether the fiscal rules would change in the face of uncertainty in the global economy:
“Stability is hugely important, the fiscal rules were put in for a purpose, they’re ironclad, they’re non-negotiable, they’re not going to change – we’re acting in the national interest. Those fiscal rules are foundational to the stability that we brought to our economy.“
Back on Monday when he was asked if he could say they wouldn’t change Starmer declined to do so. Downing Street got angry with hacks who brought it up and Streeting was sent out the next day to cover for that. Presumably after a talking to from his communications team he’s insisting they won’t change now…
