Russia President Putin Issues Congratulations To Capitals’ Alex Ovechkin After He Breaks All-Time Career Goals Record

This had to be pretty cool for Ovechkin…even if it was Putin.

Washington Capitals superstar Alex Ovechkin landed a congratulations from Russia President Vladimir Putin after he broke the legendary Wayne Gretzky’s record for the most all-time goals in a career.

Born in Moscow, Ovechkin suited up from 2001-05 for Dynamo Moscow prior to going to the NHL where he was drafted by Washington.

“I congratulate you on your outstanding record. You have surpassed legendary masters in the number of goals scored in National Hockey League regular-season games,” said Putin in an official statement via the Kremlin. Putin stated that Ovechkin passing Gretzky’s mark “has become not only your personal success, but also a real celebration for fans in Russia and abroad.”

“I wish you health, good fortune (and) fighting spirit to conquer new heights in life and in sports,” said Putin.

The 895th goal from Ovechkin came against the New York Islanders during second period action, with the score being a powerplay goal.

I understand that it’s Vladimir Putin, and Russia is a heavy opp of the United States (as they should be), but it’s still cool to get a “congratulations” from a world leader. And that’s exactly what Putin should have done considering how big of a milestone this is for Ovechkin.

With that being said, Ovechkin knows where it’s at — USA, baby.
