In September The Times was briefed by Rayner’s allies that she had a room within the Cabinet Office. As it turns out it’s Room 111 – not the one previously occupied by Dowden, Clegg etc. but a “dark” room between the tea station and bathrooms. Guido is reliably informed Rayner does not use it…

The briefing also claimed Rayner has “Cabinet Office officials supporting her.” This was confirmed by the government in a written answer to Kevin Hollinrake in November to actually mean that no permanent Cabinet Office staff are working for the DPM. The Cabinet Office has now been asked again – the answer remains the same. Rayner has no staff in her ‘DPM office’…

Rayner’s position gives her the authority to compel staff in other departments to do policy work. Not quite the same as having your own ‘power base‘ in the Cabinet Office…
