One dead, five injured after shooting at Memphis anti-violence meeting

A shooting at a gun violence intervention meeting in Memphis left one man dead, one critically injured and four others hospitalized with non-serious injuries.

The shooting happened at around 3:29 p.m. Wednesday, the Memphis Police Department said on X. Police did not identify the deceased or publicize the other circumstances of the incident.

The victim has been publicly identified by his mother as Mathew Williams, 22.

He was participating in a meeting by Memphis Allies, a group dedicated to preventing gun violence in Memphis and the surrounding area, his mother told WATN-TV.

People near the scene at the time of the shooting described it as a “drive-by” to WHBQ-TV.

“We are heartbroken over the senseless act of gun violence on Wednesday that claimed the life of a Memphis Allies program participant at one of our sites, Memphis Allies said in a statement on its website.

“Our hearts go out to the victim’s family and to the staff members who had been working with the young man … While we are devastated by Wednesday’s events, it will not shake our resolve to continue working,” the group added.
