Kemi has just wrapped up her speech declaring that Net Zero is ‘impossible to achieve by 2050’. As expected, she didn’t deliver any concrete alternative plan, instead declaring that her current shadow team will be deployed to write reports and look at solutions for the UK’s energy future. In her speech:

  • She said “We badly want to improve our natural environment“.
  • Slammed Ed Miliband’s Climate Change Act 2008 and the Tories legislating for Net Zero in 2019.
  • This is not making a moral judgement on net zero” and she’s not denying climate change exists, but says she is a ‘Net Zero sceptic’.
  • Claimed “We are going to deal with the reality, answer the real questions, confront the real problems.” 
  • Says she ‘can’t just pluck targets out of the air‘ despite having said that she supports Net Zero but that it’s not achievable by 2050.
  • Didn’t commit to scrapping Net Zero.
  • Introduced a ‘policy renewal programme’ to ‘look’ at green policies.

After saying that the Tories don’t just exist to ‘win elections’, Kemi went on to unveil that her shadow environment secretary Claire Coutinho will ‘look at all aspects of the future of the UK’s energy sector’ to come up with ‘achievable solutions’. She said her shadow team will ‘set a series of core priority questions’, writing reports that will be ‘returned for further consideration and decision’. Meanwhile, a source close to Badenoch said the Tory leader still backs Net Zero, but not by 2050. Tories shifting to policy, kind of…
