More than a thousand protesters gathered outside the residence of Border Czar Tom Homan in Jefferson County, New York, over the weekend to demand the release of a mother and her three children detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
The family was taken into custody on March 27 during a search at a dairy farm as part of a separate child pornography investigation.
ICE agents detained the mother and her children after discovering they were living in the country illegally.

The Jefferson County Democratic Committee organized the demonstration, which drew support from several local officials and advocacy groups.
New York Attorney General Letitia James issued a statement supporting the protest, saying she was “heartbroken and angry” over the decision to detain the family.
“These actions are not just cruel, they are unjust,” she said, as reported by NBC News.
According to the New York Immigration Coalition, the family has since been transferred to the Karnes County Immigration Processing Center in Texas.

During the protest, school officials and educators raised concerns over the children’s removal from the community.
Jennifer Gaffney, superintendent of the local school district, told The Intercept, “The reaction of our students is that they have been traumatized by this.”
Educator Jamie Cook, who said she personally tutored the children, expressed concern for their well-being.
“I’ve driven [the children] to their house after tutoring sessions… I know them,” she told NBC News.
Sackets Harbor Mayor Alex Morgia commented on the peaceful nature of the protest, noting, “Because we are in this small community together, I think it’s easier for us to be polite and respectful of each other’s opinions.”
Well, I was there. It was pretty much a nothing burger. Videos below. This little community isn’t anything like the violent protests in the bigger cities. Didn’t see any signs of the paid aggressive protestors. They were singing while someone played a guitar/banjo. One very… pic.twitter.com/pLvQryde67

In response to the criticism, Homan clarified that the operation was not a raid but a legally executed search warrant.
He told 7News, “It wasn’t a raid. It was a search warrant execution at a house where a family was found in the country illegally.”
He added that ICE followed proper procedures.
“We did everything by the book, and once the investigation gets to the point where we don’t have an interest in this family, then a decision will be made on release,” Homan said.
Before the protest took place, Homan addressed the planned demonstration outside his home.
“They can rally and protest all they want, but I’m not gonna be bullied — I’m not gonna be intimidated. We’re gonna do our job,” he said.
Homan also emphasized that the detention was initially necessary to determine whether the children may have been victims in the child pornography case connected to the search.
He stated that ICE had a responsibility to investigate all aspects of the situation.

Murad Awawdeh, executive director of the New York Immigration Coalition, criticized the detention, claiming the family was collateral in the broader investigation.
“They go in allegedly looking for someone else and then they’ll take whoever they can find just so they can meet their quota numbers that Donald Trump has put in place,” he said.
Despite public backlash and the protest outside his home, Homan has remained firm in his position, stating that ICE will continue to enforce federal immigration laws as required.
