LeBron James Receives Honor Nobody Would Ever Expect

NBA star LeBron James has secured a historic first — but it’s more of an on-the-shelf accomplishment than an on-court achievement.

Barbie announced the release of a LeBron James doll April 9 on Instagram.

“LeBron James is the first-ever Barbie Kenbassador, recognizing his positive impact on culture, style, and community,” Barbie said in the caption of their social media announcement. Basketball fans who never imagined seeing LeBron James as a Barbie doll can now experience it first-hand. Starting April 14, they can purchase the collectible doll at certain Target stores, Mattel Creations or through various online retailers.

The new Ken doll stands an inch taller than the rest in Mattel’s collection as a nod to the athlete’s towering 6-foot-9-inch stature, according to The Athletic. The doll represents the first male athlete doll in the brand’s 65-year legacy.

It showcases James dressed in a blue-and-white varsity jacket with “LJ” on the front and “LEBRON” on the back. The jacket is complete with three patches — one with his jersey number, 23, one representing his home state and a third featuring the LeBron James Family Foundation’s logo.

The slogan used for his foundation, “We Are Family,” is written on the doll’s t-shirt.

James’ Kenbassador doll is decked out in Nike Terminator High sneakers and also comes with some additional accessories, including Beats headphones, a watch, a fanny pack and a pair of sunglasses.

Barbie issued a lengthy statement as part of their announcement alongside a crisp image of their featured doll.

“LeBron emerged from humble inner-city beginnings to become a basketball legend and activist, vowing to give back to the community that raised him,” they wrote.

“He fulfilled his promise in 2004 by founding the LeBron James Family Foundation, empowering the kids of Akron, Ohio with the resources to succeed in the game of life. From housing, healthcare, job training, and more. LeBron and his foundation have rolled up their sleeves to create real generational change, exemplifying what it means to be a true MVP.”
