Social media was divided over the “oddly jovial” sounding call President Lyndon Johnson made to the grieving widow of assassinated president John F. Kennedy.
In the wake of the release of thousands of documents related to the 1963 assassination of JFK, new attention has focused on previously released recordings and files. One clip making the social media rounds is of Johnson speaking with former first lady Jacqueline Kennedy just weeks after her world turned upside down.
The December 21 phone call revealed the new president teasing the widow about leaving town without saying goodbye.
after JFKs assassination, Lyndon Johnson reached out to Jackie Kennedy to “console her”.
in this oddly jovial call that was recorded – within a month of her husband’s brain being blown off into her lap – Johnson can be heard telling Jackie he wanted to visit her and “spank her”… pic.twitter.com/O1SUk41pOo

“I love you,” Johnson told Kennedy in the audio clip, one of several calls he made to her.
“Aren’t you sweet? Where are you?” she asked.
“You just skipped away from this town. I ought to have had you arrested,” Johnson joked.
“But I was so mad at myself,” she replied.
“Well, you ought to be mad. You almost made me mad at you, leaving without coming by and hugging me and telling me goodbye,” Johnson said.

“Well, I miss you, and I’m thinking of you and I know your Christmas won’t be what it ought to be. But I wish that I could make it happier,” he told grieving mother.
After his wife, Claudia Alta “Lady Bird” Johnson spoke with the former first lady, the president resumed his conversation.
“When I got ready to go to home for my Christmas, the Congress just said they’d spank me and hit me right in the face and wouldn’t let me go, and that’s the way I am going to do you next time if you don’t tell me goodbye,” he said.
“Oh, listen, as soon as you get back, I’ll come and get a vitamin-B shot from Dr. Travell,” Kennedy replied as the two wrapped up with Christmas greetings and goodbyes.
Social media users were aghast at Johnson’s tone and the casual conversation after such a traumatic event.

I’m sorry, when I first heard this my mouth dropped. It was so uncomfortable to listen to, and to be acting like that after seeing her husband taken out like a dog…. was shock and awe for me.

A vitamin B shot? What did she mean by that?

This is how old southern guys talked. It does sound strange today I agree but this was completely normal back then.

The tone of the call can indeed seem jarring, given the timing. Jackie was still in mourning, having witnessed her husband’s death firsthand. Johnson’s playful remark about “spanking” might strike modern listeners as inappropriate, but it aligns with his known personality: a…
