“We’re committed to the fiscal rules, the fiscal rules are not changing. We are of course looking carefully at the global situation, it is going to have an impact on the British economy. It is a challenging time for the public finances as everyone knows.”
Backbench Labour MPs are beginning to push for more borrowing and Starmer will no doubt have been told to produce a more resolute line at the Liaison Committee later today. Starmer’s commitment to the fiscal rules may survive as long as his Chancellor does…
