Labour is also now refusing to say which law firms or individuals they have sought external legal advice from on Chagos since they came into power. Ministers just say third party legal advice was sought “various times throughout the negotiations with Mauritius” and that “the specific counsel instructed has depended on the nature of the legal issues involved.” The FCDO has separately said that it has so far racked up a £28,367.35 external legal bill “in relation to matters concerning the sovereignty of the Chagos Islands” since the election as well as additional costs “in respect of migration issues on Diego Garcia” for which it has not yet received full invoices. DC sources suggest there continues to be serious discussion around a potential US purchase of Diego Garcia and its military base from the Mauritians once the deal is completed. A US purchase would be preferable to a Mauritius giveaway…
