Democratic strategist James Carville declared during a Thursday podcast that he actually believes President Donald Trump’s administration is the gravest calamity in the history of the United States.
Carville’s remarks follow independent Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders claiming during a Tuesday “Pod Save America” interview that Trump, Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos have ushered in “the scariest times in [his] lifetime.” On “The Chris Cuomo Project,” Carville argued that Trump’s presidency poses a more significant threat to the nation than the Iraq War or even the first kamikaze attack, which occurred the same day Carville was born — October 25, 1944.

“I think right now, and I’m going be very serious, I’m 80 years old. I think this is the most serious crisis that this country has ever faced,” Carville said. “I think the entire idea of the United States is in jeopardy. I really do. I think it’s fundamentally that profound a problem.”
Host Chris Cuomo asked Carville to elaborate on why he is so concerned. The Democratic strategist began by citing the U.S. vote against a European-drafted United Nations resolution addressing Russia’s aggression toward Ukraine.
“We have a president who is siding with Belarus and North Korea and Russia. I’m sorry — that’s a crisis. We have a president that has appointed some of the most incompetent people you can imagine to the United States Congress,” Carville said. “We have a president who is starting a trade war with our three biggest trading partners and we’re watching the beginnings of which could be a financial meltdown that we can hardly imagine.”
However, Trump threatened Russia with sanctions and widespread tariffs in a Friday Truth Social post. He wrote that he was “strongly considering” these measures if Russia and Ukraine do not reach a ceasefire and final peace agreement.
“We have a president that does not respect our institutions, does not respect the limited powers, the separation of powers that we have in our Constitution,” he continued. “I can think of no bigger crisis this country’s been in in my lifetime — ever!”
Former President Joe Biden’s administration also faced legal challenges for numerous actions that were potentially unconstitutional. It imposed vaccine mandates, coerced social media platforms to censor content, tried to implement a student loan forgiveness agenda that was ruled unconstitutional and unilaterally declared that the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) had become law without congressional approval.
Carville, during a March 4 appearance on CNN’s “The Situation Room,” also said that he was so exasperated with Trump’s administration that he was struggling to refrain from “punching” his computer.
“I’m trying to take a deep breath here so that I don’t come out of my chair and start punching my computer,” he said.
