Investor in Bad Al Campbell’s Son’s Betting Ring Dies Before Receiving Payout

A financial backer in Rory Campbell’s sports betting operation has died before receiving his £160,000 investment back, according to a report in The Times. Crikey…

The married father of two messaged Campbell in 2023 saying: “Are you going to send some money soon or are you just hoping I die before you need to pay up?” It emerged over the past month that at least ten investors in the £5 million fund have reported Campbell to the Metropolitan Police. The syndicate collapsed in December after the first investors tried to withdraw their cash…

Members of the betting ring have made a string of complaints about Campbell’s management of the enterprise. Hilariously, the Campbell family then parachuted in former Blair Lord Chancellor Charlie Falconer as a kind of mediator to try to sort it all out – as if that would make the problem go away. The negotiations under Falconer promptly collapsed…

A spokesman for Rory Campbell said he would not comment on “private and confidential negotiations” and said the story from investors was “a distorted and often inaccurate account”. He continued:

“Though he was under no obligation to do so, Mr Campbell sought through lawyers to reach a settlement. Unfortunately, as these negotiations were ongoing, some of those involved chose to go down the different paths of media briefing and baseless accusations of criminal activity, in an attempt to exert pressure on Mr Campbell. The only reason this story in a high-risk industry is deemed remotely newsworthy is because Mr Campbell has a well-known father with a political profile. That strategy has failed. We sought to resolve this in a reasonable manner and regret that the actions of others have made this impossible.”

Going down the path of media briefing with baseless accusations in an attempt to exert pressure? Now who’s an expert at that?
