An illegal immigrant in Florida pleaded guilty to registering and voting in U.S. elections and to possessing a gun.
Carlos Abreu, 36, assumed another man’s identity in 2007 as he fled sex offense accusations in New Jersey.
He then used the other identity as if he were any other citizen, buying firearms and registering and voting in U.S. elections in Florida.
His guilty pleas to the three charges came last week.
Abreu, a citizen of the Dominican Republic, sneaked into the U.S. in 2001. He married and had a child in New Jersey but fled after being accused of sexual assault, kidnapping and endangering a child.
The Biden Justice Department charged him last year with aggravated identity theft and lying to get a U.S. passport. The Trump Justice Department added the illegal voting charge.
Federal prosecutors indicated in court documents that New Jersey may still ask for Abreu to come stand trial on the original state charges.
His is one of several instances of illegal immigrants casting ballots where charges have been brought the past year.
If convicted, Abreu could be deported or imprisoned for 15 years, according to the DOJ.
Abreu was in Florida’s Broward Main Jail as of Monday.
