Get the popcorn, Senator Kennedy just tarred and feathered another smug witness in today’s hearing

Sen. John Kennedy, R-Louisiana, is proving once again that his easygoing and funny demeanor is not to be mistaken for weakness.

Kennedy brought the receipts during a hearing with legal scholar Dr. Mary Anne Franks, grilling her over previous social media posts that obsessed over the patriarchy.

Watch:

“As I understand it your position, Professor Franks, I think you used the word ‘myth’ it is a ‘myth’ that the Biden administration used government to compel private speech but that the Trump administration is doing that. Is that a fair characterization?” Kennedy asked.

“Yes, that is correct,” she responded confidently.

“Do you think perhaps you’re allowing your personal political beliefs to affect your objectivity here?” the senator asked, allowing Franks to dig her own proverbial grave.

“No I do not,” she shot back. “What is guiding my answers here is that I’m looking to see what the Supreme Court has said.”

“Lemme ask you a couple questions. You wrote a law review article in December 2023 for the New York University of Law review about the two cases, Bruin – Supreme Court case – and Dobbs,” Kennedy continued. “In this article you said ‘Taken together these two cases demonstrate that the Supreme Court has embraced the use of the Constitution as a tool of racial patriarchy.’ Did you say that?”

“Yes,” Franks responded.

“Okay, and then you went on to say ‘When the Supreme Court declares that there is a constitutional right to armed self-defense in public, it openly embraces and promotes a culture that privileges white men’s ability to terrorize and kill those that they perceive as threats.’ Did I read that correctly?”

“I believe so, thank you for reading that,” she snarked.

“And did you also say in that article ‘By simultaneously expanding white men’s right to kill and constricting women’s right not to die, this Supreme Court has turned the Constitution into a homicide pact as well.’ Did you write that?” the befuddled Senator inquired.

“That sounds like me,” Franks responded with a smirk.

Kennedy then turned to Franks’ “provocative” X posts.

“On November 7, 2024, here’s one of your tweets. ‘The majority of Americans hate women more than they love anything. Including democracy.’ Did I read that correctly?”

“I am not sure what this has to do with the subject matter of this hearing,” she attempted to deflect.

“Did you say it?” Kennedy pressed.

“I do not have those words in front of me, I probably said something along those lines but what is the relevance of that to this hearing?” Franks asked again.

“But your political beliefs don’t impact your feelings about President Biden or President Trump?” Kennedy mused, circling back to the beginning of his line of questioning.

“I don’t have feelings about either of them,” Franks spat, visibly frustrated. “What I have is-”

“It seems to me like your favorite feeling is anger,” the senator needled.

“You issued another tweet, this one in May of 2022. You said ‘There’s a reason why the conservative-dominated Supreme Court thinks the Constitution does not contain a right to an abortion but is convinced that it contains an individual right to possess firearms, and that reason is white male supremacy.’ Did I read that correctly?” Kennedy asked again.

“Is there a question in this?” Franks said.

“Did I read that correctly?” Kennedy pressed again.

“Is there a question relevant to this hearing?” the legal scholar deflected.

“Do you really think the United States Supreme Court – you’re an officer of the court! – is guided by ‘white male supremacy’?” Kennedy asked.

X users were delighted by the heated back and forth:
