California Governor Gavin Newsom continues his effort to shed his left-wing past to position himself as a moderate for a potential 2028 presidential run and declared that the Democrat brand has become “toxic” in an early appeal to swing voters.
The outgoing governor has embarked on a media tour to rehab his image after dropping a nuke on his own state and failing spectacularly in the response to the devastating wildfires near Los Angeles earlier this year.
His latest stop was on “Real Time With Bill Maher” where he chatted with the old school liberal host on the latest edition of his popular HBO show, suggesting that he might be the one who could rescue the Democratic Party from the dire situation that it finds itself in after fellow Californian Kamala Harris was drubbed by President Donald J. Trump in the November election, also costing Dems control of the Senate.
During the sit-down, Maher quoted Sen. John Fetterman (D-Pa.), who has strongly criticized the AOC-Jasmine Crockett faction that is currently dominant, saying that “if we don’t get our s*** together, we’ll be a permanent minority” which Newsom was in agreement with.
Bill Maher asks Gavin Newsom about the prospects of the Democrat party and praises Gavin for talking to the ‘other side’ on his podcast:
Maher: “John Fetterman said ‘If we don’t get our shit together, we’re going to be a permanent minority’

“These guys are crushing us, the Democratic brand is toxic right now,” the soon-to-be ex-governor said of Trump and MAGA. pointing to a recent NBC News poll showing the party’s approval rating at a miserable 27 percent, the lowest in decades.
Newsom also criticized his party for its contempt for people that it disagrees with and the embrace of “cancel culture” to punish noncompliance with left-wing ideology.
“We talk down to people,” the governor said. “We talk past people.”
“This idea that we can’t even have a conversation with the other side?” Newsom asked, peppering his conversation with the profanity that Democrats now use as an integral part of their messaging.
But try as he may, Newsom can’t run from his record, and Maher suggested that he isn’t one who should cast stones, considering that he was the “poster boy” for promoting toxic “woke” ideology. With one example being a California law that he signed, prohibiting schools from notifying parents if their children were being assimilated into the transgender Borg.

“Because our party’s getting our ass kicked,” Newsom is quoted by the Los Angeles Times from a recent podcast. “Because the Democratic Party brand is toxic. Because people don’t think we make any damn sense. They think we make noise. They don’t think we support them. You fill in the generic them. They don’t think we have their values. They think we’re elite. We talk down to people. We talk past people. They think we just think we’re smarter than other people, that we’re so judgmental and full of ourselves.”
While Newsom has yet to formally declare his White House candidacy, every move that he makes indicates that he is set to fill the party’s leadership void with a new podcast and a slew of media appearances as he seeks to wrest control from Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Bernie Sanders and Crockett by bamboozling people into believing that he’s something different than what he has always been: a hard core leftist.
