Former NFL Player and Superbowl Winner Climbs the Ranks in Local Law Enforcement [WATCH]

Jay Ross, a former NFL player and Super Bowl champion, has traded in his football helmet for a badge, climbing the ranks in North Carolina law enforcement.

The Wilmington native was recently promoted to sergeant at the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office, where he will now lead the School Resource Officer (SRO) Unit, as reported by Police 1.

Ross, who once battled it out on the gridiron, now dedicates his time to protecting and mentoring young students. His journey started at East Carolina University, where he played college football before signing with the New Orleans Saints in 2010.

He later joined the Green Bay Packers, securing a Super Bowl ring during their championship season. After a stint with the Buffalo Bills, Ross retired from the NFL in 2013.

Rather than chasing a career in sports media or corporate endorsements like many ex-athletes, Ross returned to Wilmington and chose a different kind of service—law enforcement.

He joined the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office as a deputy and quickly proved himself. On March 13, Sheriff Ed McMahon officially promoted Ross to sergeant, putting him in charge of the department’s SRO program.

Sheriff McMahon had high praise for Ross, emphasizing his leadership and ability to connect with the younger generation.

“Jay understands the challenges our youth face today and has a unique ability to connect with them in a way that fosters trust and respect. His experience both on and off the field has shaped him into a leader who leads with compassion, discipline and a deep commitment to serving our schools. I have no doubt that under his leadership, our School Resource Officer program will continue to strengthen the relationship between law enforcement and the students, faculty and parents we serve.”

Ross has already served in the department’s Vice Narcotics Unit, making his move to overseeing school resource officers another testament to his commitment to law and order.

I’m thankful for Sheriff McMahon and Chief Deputy Hart for believing in me and giving me the opportunity to advance in my law enforcement career. I love this community I serve and God guided this path for me to continue my service.”

At a time when law enforcement is often under attack from the left, Ross’ transition from professional sports to public service stands as a strong example of leadership and commitment.
