Former GOP Utah rep Mia Love dead at 49

Former Republican Utah Rep. Mia Love died at 49 on Sunday.

Love died at her home in Saratoga Springs, Utah, according to a statement from her family posted on X Sunday. Love was a daughter of Haitian immigrants, and in 2014 became the first black Republican woman elected to Congress.

“With grateful hearts filled to overflowing for the profound influence of Mia on our lives, we want you to know that she passed away peacefully today,” Love’s family wrote in the social media post. “She was in her home surrounded by family. In the midst of a celebration of her life and an avalanche of happy memories, Mia quietly slipped the bands of mortality and, as her words and vision always did, soared heavenward. We are thankful for the many good wishes, prayers and condolences. We are taking some time as a family and will provide information about funeral services and a public celebration of her life in the days to come.”

“Members of Congress are mourning the passing of @MiaBLove, who was a trusted friend and colleague, an extraordinary person, and an exceptional leader,” Republican Speaker of the House Mike Johnson said Monday in a post on X. “She will always be remembered for her warm smile and wit, and her historic contributions. God bless her family and her legacy. Our prayers are with you all.”

Love served as the U.S. representative for Utah’s 4th congressional district from 2015 to 2019. While the family’s social media post did not cite a cause of death, Love’s daughter had previously said on social media that she had been diagnosed with a glioblastoma, a form of brain cancer, USA Today reported.
