FBI Probes Internal Leaks as Kash Patel Calls Out ‘Dishonest Leakers’

The FBI has opened an internal investigation to identify and hold accountable those leaking what officials describe as “false information” to the media.

The probe comes weeks after Kash Patel, a longtime ally of President Donald Trump, took over as FBI director.

According to FBI sources who spoke with Just the News, the investigation into leaks will be extensive and aggressive, potentially including phone seizures, polygraph tests, and criminal referrals for individuals found to have shared misleading information with the press.

“Director Patel’s FBI will not tolerate the dissemination of false information designed to both undermine the FBI’s mission and put our brave agents at security risk,” FBI spokesman Ben Williamson said.

“Dishonest leakers will be identified and dealt with appropriately.”

As part of Patel’s efforts to prevent the spread of misinformation, the FBI has canceled its subscription to The Wall Street Journal, a publication that has recently published several reports citing anonymous sources within the agency.

“The FBI will no longer use precious American tax dollars to help spread false information about our agents who put themselves in harm’s way,” Williamson told Just the News.

A February article in The Wall Street Journal detailed what it described as Patel’s “whirlwind start” at the FBI, citing anonymous officials.

On Friday, the publication ran another report alleging that Patel had requested a secure landline to connect directly to Trump’s Oval Office and had inquired about hiring a private security detail due to distrust of FBI agents.

FBI officials denied the claims, with Williamson stating they were “simply not true.”

Another Wall Street Journal report, also citing unnamed sources, claimed that senior Justice Department officials had begun focusing more on immigration and gang violence, shifting attention away from previous concerns about threats from China and Russia.

Williamson rejected this assertion as “absolutely false.”

Internal FBI directives reviewed by Just the News reportedly show that Patel has maintained a focus on threats posed by the Chinese Communist Party.

Since taking office, Patel has made national security a priority.

Last week, he announced the arrests of two active-duty U.S. Army soldiers and one former soldier for allegedly attempting to transmit classified military intelligence to China.

Jian Zhao and Li Tian, both stationed at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, were arrested alongside former soldier Ruoyu Duan.

According to federal authorities, Zhao was charged for allegedly conspiring to send classified hard drives marked “SECRET” and “TOP SECRET” to China.

Patel addressed the arrests in a statement, saying, “These individuals have been charged with stealing America’s defense intelligence capabilities and empowering adversaries like China in betrayal of our country… they will now face American justice.”

Additionally, Patel’s tenure has included the arrest of Mohammad Sharifullah, who was charged as a co-conspirator in the August 2021 Abbey Gate attack, a deadly bombing during the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan.

Patel’s confirmation as FBI director in February was met with strong reactions from both parties.

The Senate confirmed him in a 51-49 vote, with Democrats voicing concerns about his approach.

Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL), the top Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee, criticized Patel’s leadership, saying he has a “recurring instinct to threaten retribution against his and President Trump’s perceived enemies.”

Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley (R-IA) defended Patel’s leadership, saying the FBI needed reforms.

“Change is coming to the seventh floor of the J. Edgar Hoover Building, and that is a good thing,” Grassley stated.

“Over the past several years, political infection has diminished the FBI’s credibility and distracted the Bureau from its core law enforcement responsibilities. As FBI director, Kash Patel promises to restore the FBI’s primary focus on law and order, as well as national security, and do right by the brave FBI agents who work day in and day out to keep Americans safe.”

As the FBI investigates internal leaks, Patel’s leadership continues to reshape the agency’s focus, reinforcing its mission amid ongoing scrutiny.
