Ex-WaPo Journalist Responds to Biden Death Post With Alarming Comment

Former Washington Post journalist Taylor Lorenz faced renewed criticism this week after she responded to a social media post suggesting President Joe Biden had died by stating:

“This tweet got my hopes up.”

The comment was posted on Sunday, April 6, in response to a tweet that featured a black-and-white image of President Biden alongside the caption, “RIP Joe Biden 1942-2025…You were always a racist f**king monster, and will not be missed.”

As reported by The New York Post, Lorenz added a frowny face emoji to her quote tweet, sparking a wave of backlash from social media users, some of whom described her response as “disgusting.”

In a statement to The New York Post, Lorenz defended her reaction and reiterated her opposition to President Biden, citing his administration’s support for Israel and other policies.

“Joe Biden is a war criminal who funded Israel’s genocide of the Palestinian people, completely dismantled public health protections during an ongoing pandemic, sacrificing millions of innocent people’s lives for the economy, among a slew of other atrocities. My sympathies lie fully with those Joe Biden has harmed and killed.”

On Monday, April 7, Lorenz dismissed the backlash and doubled down on her remarks in another social media post.

“It’s so funny to see right wingers and reactionaries pearl clutching every time I say something about how much I hate Joe Biden. Like please be fr you guys don’t give a f**k about Joe Biden you hate that man too.”

Lorenz, who previously worked for The Washington Post, The New York Times, The Atlantic, and The Daily Beast, now runs her own digital outlet, User Mag. She has faced criticism in the past for controversial online statements.

In December 2024, she defended posts that celebrated the assassination of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, who was fatally shot outside the Hilton hotel in Midtown Manhattan.

Writing in her newsletter, Lorenz said:

““If you have watched a loved one die because an insurance conglomerate has denied their life saving treatment as a cost cutting measure, yes, it’s natural to wish that the people who run such conglomerates would suffer the same fate.”

She later reinforced her stance in an appearance with Piers Morgan, telling the host she felt “joy” over Thompson’s death.

Following those comments, Vox Media reportedly ended its deal to cross-promote Lorenz’s podcast and YouTube show. Semafor first reported the split, which was later confirmed by The Post.

Lorenz disputed the report, claiming she remains under contract with Vox Media: Podcast Network and stating that her show has always been independently distributed through her own platforms. She also emphasized that she has never worked for Vox Media’s main publishing division.
