As his own companies are left “suffering” due to his role in the Trump administration, Elon Musk laid out the “esoteric” thing that keeps him up at night.
“Humanity is dying.”
In addition to a sit-down that included other members of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), Musk, the advisory group’s leader, had conducted a one-on-one interview with Fox News anchor Bret Baier. It was during that discussion that the world’s richest man expressed that a key concern of his remained global declining birth rates.
“Well, there’s a lot of things that I suppose that I worry about. And some of these things will seem esoteric to people,” he began after a pause when asked about his worries. “The birth rate is very low in almost every country, and unless that changes, civilization will disappear.”
Calling out the birth rates in the United States and Korea specifically, Musk, the father of 14, warned that “nothing seems to be turning that around. Humanity is dying.”

According to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS), the fertility rate in the United States had declined 3% from 2022 to 2023, reaching a historic low in a second consecutive year of decline, landing at around 1.6 births per woman.
Along with his fears about the preservation of mankind, Musk also addressed concern for the future of the country as he told Baier, “I worry generally about the strength of America. America is the central column that holds up all of Western civilizations … If that column fails, it’s all over. You can’t run off to New Zealand or some other place. It’s over. So either we strengthen that column and make sure America is strong, and we’ll be strong for a long time, or that roof’s coming down.”
Meanwhile, it remained that his efforts to help President Donald Trump achieve efficiency in the federal government and slash spending by a targeted $2 trillion ahead of a July 4, 2026 deadline have been a detriment to his personal entrepreneurial efforts.
“My companies are suffering,” he explained to Baier as Tesla in particular had been plagued by activist-driven protests, including arson and gunfire, promoted through “propaganda by the far-left.”
The billionaire reminded that his companies were also at a disadvantage due to his role that prohibited him from lobbying. At the same time, “Everything I do is under extreme scrutiny. So there’s not an action I can take that doesn’t get scrutiny six ways to Sunday. Every action that the DOGE team does is public … It’s the most amount of transparency there’s been about any government thing ever.”
“The sheer amount of waste and fraud in the government — it is astonishing, it’s mind-blowing,” he’d told the anchor during the first part of the interview while flanked by DOGE team members. “We routinely encounter wastes of a billion dollars or more, casually. For example, like the simple survey that was literally [a] 10-questions survey. You could do it with SurveyMonkey, [which] would cost about $10,000. The government was being charged almost a billion dollars for that.”
As the interview wrapped up, Musk remained optimistic about the future, noting, “I do think there is the potential for a great future as long as America remains the land of freedom and opportunity.”
“Freedom means that the government does not infringe upon your personal liberties; that you can do what you want as long as it doesn’t harm another person. Land of opportunity means that you succeed on the basis of your merits, on how hard you work and how good you are at your job,” he explained before adding, “Those fundamental principles are what will ensure a great future.”
