Imitation may act as the sincerest form of flattery. But Democrats flatter not Donald Trump but their own egos when they think emulating the president’s occasional profanity and pugnacious spirit reorients their party in the right direction.
“Donald Trump and Elon Musk are dismantling our country piece by piece, and so many Democrats seem content to just sit back and let ‘em,” Democrat Kat Abughazaleh, whose résumé at 26 already includes stops at Media Matters and Mother Jones, said in a video announcing her primary challenge to Jan Schakowsky in Illinois-9. “So, I say it’s time to drop the excuses and grow a f‑‑‑ing spine.”
At least Trump speaks extemporaneously when he uses foul language. Abughazaleh repeats it from a script.
Democrats walk willingly into that Dwayne Elizondo Mountain Dew Herbert Camacho night. How long after they codify the 72 genders do they convince us to pour Brawndo on the crops?
The use of obscenity, an off-putting trait in the president, does not amount to the primary sin for Abughazaleh and other suddenly potty-mouthed Democrats. Instead, the lack of authenticity does. Anger, such as when Ronald Reagan reminded in New Hampshire that he was paying for the microphone or when Harry Truman called a critic of his daughter’s musical performance an “eight ulcer man on four ulcer pay,” occasionally can endear a politician to the public, but only when natural and not manufactured.
Rep. Jasmine Crockett, days after expressing her wish for “Elon Musk to be taken down” for her birthday, implored Democrats to “punch” their opponents and said of Ted Cruz that “this dude has to be knocked over the head, like hard.” At a Human Rights Campaign event, ironically, Crockett referred to paralyzed Greg Abbott as “Governor Hot Wheels,” adding of the Texan, “And the only thing hot about him is that he is a hot a– mess, honey.” (RELATED: Five Quick Things: Our National Crazy Eurotrash Girlfriend)
This all feels fake and forced. Democrats do nothing independent of the horde. Recall that earlier this month, 22 Capitol Hill Democrats released videos relying essentially on the same script that blasted Trump for “$#!+ that ain’t true.” (RELATED: The Democratic Party Is Collapsing)
How about stuff that isn’t authentic? Truth matters. In politics, where voters often connect to humans more than the words they utter, authenticity matters more.
Equally damning, this all amounts to a psychological dodge. Democrats cannot process that the electorate rejects the ideas it advances. So, they do not rethink substance. Instead, they revamp their style as though the failure to express anger and the failure to use four-letter words enough doomed them in November. Democrats can learn from Donald Trump. This does not involve impersonating his style. Instead, they need to look at the substantive changes he made to the Republican platform. They should do likewise with the albatross issues in their own platform. (RELATED: Democrats Are Looking For a New Face. Is It AOC?)
Trump assessed that Republicans tolerated getting creamed on trade deals and allowing millions of illegal immigrants into the country. He thought that the party of George W. Bush, John McCain, and Mitt Romney involved the United States in too many expensive wars with no certain end. He sought, perhaps in vain, to de-emphasize the rhetorical reliance on social issues. He acted, perhaps not consciously, as a one-man obliterator of political correctness in putting his own thoughts on blast rather than behind a curtain.
Democrats refuse to conclude, as Trump did before his announcement for president in 2015, that the party errs on many important issues. So, instead of changing their tune, Democrats change their image. This I’m-right-right-right compulsion puts the party on the wrong side of elections until Republicans screw up matters to such a degree that the country feels like giving the other side a chance.
Ultimately, voters prefer the genuine article to copycats.
Trump appears comfortable in his own skin. Democrats appear revolting when trying to wear it.
