Kalamazoo-based attorney Jessica Swartz announced Wednesday she is making her second bid as a Democratic candidate to represent Michigan’s 4th Congressional District.
Swartz declared her candidacy in a post on X, vowing to bring down costs for Michigan families and create “good-paying jobs” in her state if she is elected. Notably, Michigan was viewed as one of the top battleground states in the 2024 election cycle.
“We cannot sit by and watch the extremists in Washington dismantle our Democracy, tank our economy, and increase taxes on the working class, all the while giving kickbacks to billionaires like Elon Musk,” Swartz wrote on X.
Michigan’s 4th Congressional District is currently held by Republican Michigan Rep. Bill Huizenga, who was first elected to Congress in 2011. Huizenga notably defeated Swartz in the November 2024 election, notching 55.1% of the vote to Swartz’s 43.4%.
Swartz previously worked as an appellate attorney for the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, according to her campaign website. She has promoted a variety of left-wing initiatives over the past few years, such as protecting abortion rights and combating climate change.
“Jessica Swartz is nothing more than an out of touch liberal, soundly rejected by Michiganders last year and bound for another crushing defeat,” National Republican Congressional Committee spokesman Zach Bannon told the Daily Caller News Foundation. “While Bill Huizenga continues to deliver real results, whoever emerges from the Democrats’ radical primary will be completely irrelevant and destined for failure.”

The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee announced Tuesday a list of “competitive” 35 Republican-held Congressional Districts the Democratic Party is targeting as they aim to take back control of the House in 2026, which named Huizenga’s seat as one that the Democratic Party views as a potential key pickup opportunity for the 2026 midterms.
President Donald Trump swept Michigan with 49.7% of the vote to former Vice President Kamala Harris’ 48.3%. In the 2020 presidential election, former President Joe Biden won Michigan with 51% of the vote to Trump’s 48%.
Swartz’s campaign did not immediately respond to the Daily Caller News Foundation’s request for comment.
