President Donald Trump is calling on Congress to make Daylight Saving Time permanent, renewing the national conversation over the twice-yearly time changes, as reported by Fox News.
In a post on Truth Social Friday morning, Trump said the current practice of changing the clocks is a “big inconvenience” and “a very costly event” for the federal government.

“The House and Senate should push hard for more Daylight at the end of a day. Very popular and, most importantly, no more changing of the clocks, a big inconvenience and, for our government, A VERY COSTLY EVENT!!!” Trump wrote.

Daylight Saving Time begins each spring when clocks are moved forward by one hour, resulting in more daylight in the evening. In the fall, clocks are set back to return to Standard Time. Most U.S. states follow this schedule.
Earlier this year, Trump described the issue as a “50-50” matter, recognizing that while many people favor more daylight later in the day, others prefer it earlier.

In a previous post from December, Trump signaled his opposition to the current system and said Republicans would work to do away with it.
“The Republican Party will use its best efforts to eliminate Daylight Saving Time, which has a small but strong constituency, but shouldn’t! Daylight Saving Time is inconvenient, and very costly to our Nation,” he posted.

The Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation took up the issue again Thursday in a hearing titled, “If I Could Turn Back Time: Should We Lock the Clock?”
Lawmakers from both parties voiced support for ending the practice of switching between Daylight Saving Time and Standard Time.
Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, and Sen. Lisa Blunt Rochester, D-Del., expressed interest in finding a solution to the clock-changing cycle. Their bipartisan comments reflect growing momentum in both chambers of Congress to resolve the long-running debate.

Fox News Digital contacted the White House for a statement regarding the president’s comments but did not receive a response as of Friday afternoon.
Though legislation has been introduced multiple times over the years to make Daylight Saving Time permanent, none has passed both chambers. Supporters argue the move would reduce health issues, improve productivity, and cut down on energy costs.
The renewed push from President Trump adds new urgency to an issue that has seen repeated interest from lawmakers and citizens alike.
