Charles Payne reminds Canada’s new Trump-bashing PM where his country ranks in economic pecking order

Fox Business host Charles Payne reminded Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney where his own country stands on the economic pecking order as he bashed President Donald Trump’s tariffs.

Carney accused Trump of threatening his country’s sovereignty by imposing 25% tariffs on the nation and an additional 50% tariff on Canadian steel and aluminum to address the illegal immigration crisis and fentanyl epidemic that has plagued the U.S. During his appearance on “Fox & Friends,” Payne cited the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development’s (OECD) prediction from 2021 that Canada will have the “worst performing” economy out of any other advanced nation in the next decade.

“[Carney] had the nerve to mention the economy. Let me just read something to you real quick, Lawrence [Jones]. This is the OECD. ‘The worst economy for any advanced nation for the decade will be Canada.’ I’m talking out of 36 countries, so you have Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Costa Rica, Ireland, Czech Republic, go all the way down, the absolute worst. So he’s picking this up from [former Canadian Prime Minister Justin] Trudeau. This is the economy. He’s talking about running an economy. Their economy, their quality of life has collapsed. Their GDP versus [the] American was so close at one point, almost 20 years ago it was about 10% points away, now it’s not even 25% … Canada has imploded. Small business, non-existent.”

Canada’s prospects for real per capita growth domestic product (GDP) from 2020-2030 is poor because of its “feeble expected growth in output per hour worked,” according to the OECD data. The report further suggested that Canada will have the “worst economic performance” among advanced countries from 2030-2060, with real per capita GDP advancing by just 0.8%.

Payne stated that Trump simply wants Canada to have fair trade practices and mitigate the amount of fentanyl pouring into the U.S. from the northern border. The president stated that Canada has “ripped” off the U.S. with tariffs on lumber, dairy products and other essential imports and told Fox News’ Laura Ingraham that the nation is one of the “nastiest” countries to negotiate with.

“Someone’s asking you to have fair trade with them, someone’s asking you not to have drugs pouring into their country,” Payne said. “How many times do you go to a restaurant and you see a group of people and then the check comes and then everyone takes out their money? That’s what friends do. They say we’ll equally share the burden.”

Trump initially imposed 25% tariffs on Mexican imports, though he postponed these tariffs until April 2 after speaking with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum. When Trump first announced his tariff plan in February, the Mexican president deployed 10,000 National Guard troops to the U.S.-Mexico border, while former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau established a Fentanyl Czar in exchange for a pause on the tariffs.

The president has further suggested that Canada should become the 51st state of the U.S., sparking outrage among Canadians. Trump told Fox News’ Peter Doocy Friday that Canada may not be as liberal as generally believed and that it would make a “great” state.
