Attorney General Pam Bondi has announced a Department of Justice lawsuit against the state of Maine for failing to ban biologically male athletes from female sports.
The legal action was announced at a press conference on Wednesday, marking the latest chapter in the saga between the state and President Donald Trump. Maine has stood in opposition to Trump’s desire to keep male students out of girls’ sports.
Flanked by activist Riley Gaines and fencer Stephanie Turner, who recently gained popularity in conservative circles for protesting her trans opponent by kneeling, Bondi vowed to continue protecting women’s spaces.

“The Department of Justice will not sit by when women are discriminated against in sports,” she said.
“We want to get states to comply with us,” she continued, adding that the DOJ is seeking “injunctions” that would have state titles returned to the female athletes who lost them to biological males competing in women’s divisions.
“It’s sad that this has to be a political issue, and I think this was a missed opportunity by the Democrats to garner support among the vast majority of the United States,” Turner said during her remarks. “I’m so grateful that we have an administration that is taking this issue seriously.”
This comes months after Trump told Maine Gov. Janet Mills “I’ll see you in court” when she doubled down on her state’s refusal to comply with the executive order.
