Biden’s Industrial Censorship Complex Spans 90 Federal Agencies

A new report from the Media Research Center (MRC) has revealed that 90 federal agencies were involved in at least 57 distinct censorship initiatives during the Biden-Harris administration, working in collaboration with Big Tech platforms to control online speech, suppress political opponents, and regulate artificial intelligence.

The report, which follows House Judiciary Committee investigations into government-backed censorship, details how the Department of Justice (DOJ), Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Federal Communications Commission (FCC), and State Department played key roles in restricting speech.

The findings come as the Trump administration continues to battle left-leaning courts and judicial overreach, with Chief Justice John Roberts recently rebuking President Donald Trump over his criticism of activist judges.

According to the MRC, the censorship efforts were largely conducted “behind closed doors”, but were publicly reinforced by Joe Biden himself.

The administration consistently pressured Big Tech to crack down on opposition voices, accused platforms of being “un-American” for refusing to engage in censorship programs, and even blamed Meta (Facebook’s parent company) for “killing people” by not censoring enough content.

MRC also noted that Attorney General Merrick Garland refused to investigate or prosecute any officials involved in these censorship initiatives, despite a federal judge likening the efforts to an “Orwellian ‘Ministry of Truth’.”

The report highlights multiple censorship tactics, including:

• DHS coordination with the U.K.’s Counter Disinformation Unit to censor speech in both countries.
• DOJ’s manipulation of antitrust laws to force AI developers into “anticompetitive censorship.”

MRC’s findings show that AI played a major role in the Biden-Harris administration’s efforts to control public discourse. Among the initiatives:

• Secretary of State Antony Blinken’s “Partnership for Global Inclusivity” used $3 million in taxpayer funds to train AI to favor certain ideologies while suppressing opposing views.
• The FCC’s vague regulations aimed at AI-generated political content could be weaponized against conservative voices.
• The National Strategy to Counter Antisemitism, which the MRC says used concerns about hate speech as a pretext to push government-coerced censorship.

Elon Musk became a primary target of these censorship programs after purchasing Twitter (now X) and restoring previously banned conservative voices.

According to the report, special prosecutor Jack Smith placed a gag order on X, preventing the platform from informing users—including then-GOP nominee Donald Trump—that their private messages were being accessed.

Additionally, the State Department-funded a Ukrainian group that pressured Big Tech to censor Musk over his antiwar views.

The National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) also pursued Musk repeatedly, including over a post criticizing the United Auto Workers (UAW) and warning Tesla employees about the risks of unionizing.

The House Judiciary Committee, led by Chairman Jim Jordan (R-OH), has been investigating the Biden-Harris administration’s censorship efforts, issuing subpoenas last month that forced FBI Director Kash Patel to turn over key documents.

The MRC report suggests that Congress and the Trump administration take aggressive action to undo the damage, including:

• Firing federal officials involved in censorship, including National Science Foundation Director Sethuraman Panchanathan for overseeing grants targeting so-called misinformation.
• Defunding organizations like the Poynter Institute, whose fact-checkers promoted the now-debunked COVID-19 lab-leak denial.
• Passing legislation, such as Rep. Harriet Hageman’s (R-WY) bill, modeled after the Censorship Accountability Act, which would allow Americans to sue federal officials for First Amendment violations.
• Reasserting congressional control over independent agencies like the NLRB and SEC, which have been weaponized for political purposes.

The report also uncovered how the State Department’s Global Engagement Center (GEC) continued censorship efforts even after Congress declined to reauthorize it in December.

The administration attempted to hide GEC’s work by transferring staff to various sub-agencies, including a new Counter Foreign Information Manipulation & Interference Hub.

With the Trump administration prioritizing free speech protections, the battle against government-backed censorship is expected to continue.

The MRC report serves as a blueprint for dismantling Biden-era suppression tactics and preventing future administrations from engaging in coordinated efforts to silence political opposition.

As House Republicans push for greater accountability and Trump’s leadership focuses on restoring First Amendment protections, the extent of the Biden-Harris administration’s censorship agenda is expected to face further scrutiny in the months ahead.
