All talk when it comes to ‘traitors gutting our beloved nation’

A tough-talking Republican senator proved little more to James Woods in a fiery post calling out the “traitors gutting our beloved nation like a fetid cancer.”

As costly investigations on top of soundbite-filled hearings had accomplished little more than to propagate viral clips of seemingly self-aggrandizing lawmakers, the outspoken actor had evidently had enough. To that end, when Missouri Sen. Josh Hawley (R) touted “consequences” following a Facebook whistleblower hearing, Woods called out the congressman whom he asserted “won’t do anything but talk.”

Like a cross between a campaign ad and a trailer for a political thriller, Hawley had shared a sizzle reel set to cinematic music of a recent hearing with Facebook whistleblower Sarah Wynn-Williams under the caption, “What our investigation has revealed — Facebook and Mark Zuckerberg did business with the Chinese Communist Party, built censorship tools for them, and turned over user data — and lied about it to Congress & the American people. Now it’s time for consequences.”

In response, the award-winning actor pulled no punches as he wrote on X, “While I respect your position and your patriotism, we all know you won’t do anything but talk. It saddens me, as you are the last bulwark against the traitors gutting our beloved nation like a fetid cancer.”

Hawley’s video highlighted moments from a Wednesday hearing where Wynn-Williams, the former director of global public policy at Facebook, had testified that she witnessed Meta executives “repeatedly undermine U.S. national security and betray American values.”

“Company executives lied about what they were doing with the Chinese Communist Party to employees, shareholders, Congress and the American public,” she told the Senate Judiciary Committee’s Subcommittee on Crime and Counterterrorism.

While the senator claimed that Meta was willing to give China access to user data stored in China, a statement from Meta spokesperson Ryan Daniels pushed back on the testimony, referring to it as “riddled with false claims” and “divorced from reality.”

“While Mark Zuckerberg himself was public about our interest in offering our services in China and details were widely reported beginning over a decade ago, the fact is this: we do not operate our services in China today,” added Daniels.

Of course, Woods’ sentiment directed at the senator was wholly understandable, particularly in recent years as promises of accountability had seen continued updates without consequences as House committees investigated the alleged influence-peddling of then-President Joe Biden in conjunction with the foreign business dealings of his son, Hunter Biden, who walked away with a blanket pardon spanning more than a decade’s time.

Hawley also shared a letter sent to Zuckerberg, calling on the billionaire to attend an as-yet unscheduled hearing entitled, “A Time for Truth, Part II: Oversight of Meta’s Foreign Relations and Representations to the United States Congress.”

The actor was hardly alone in bristling at the toothless bites of Republican officials that had thus far proven harmless in achieving accountability on any number of issues, including Russian collusion, the sham Jan. 6 committee, and election integrity.
