Aliakbar Mohammed Amin of Georgia faces charges for threatening Tulsi Gabbard and her family

A Georgia man was arrested by federal authorities last week and faces charges for threatening Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard and her family.

The Justice Department announced the arrest of Aliakbar Mohammed Amin, 24, on Monday, saying he sent threatening text messages to Ms. Gabbard between March 29 and April 1.

Mr. Amin, who lives in the Atlanta suburb of Lilburn, allegedly texted, “You and your family are going to die soon” and “I will personally do the job if necessary,” the U.S. Attorney’s Office reported.

The Justice Department said another statement from Mr. Amin to Ms. Gabbard was, “Prepare to die, you, Tulsi, and everyone you hold dear. America will burn.”

Investigators also said they found social media threats posted by Mr. Amin against Ms. Gabbard, including an image displaying a firearm pointed at her. Another image showed a gun pointed at the DNI director and her husband.

The DOJ is charging Mr. Amin under a law that covers threats made across state lines. He will remain in custody until trial.

“Threatening to harm public officials is a criminal act that cannot be excused as political discourse,” said interim U.S. Attorney Richard S. Moultrie Jr. “Our Office, in coordination with our law enforcement partners, will vigorously prosecute individuals who commit these acts of violence.”

The threats against Ms. Gabbard and her family come in the wake of a handful of violent perpetrators who tried to harm high-profile political figures in recent days, including President Trump, Pennsylvania Democratic Gov. Josh Shapiro and South Carolina Republican Rep. Nancy Mace.
