Democrat California Senator Adam Schiff admitted his party lost the 2024 election due to not being “laser-focused” on the high cost of living while attempting to bash President Donald Trump’s economy Sunday on ABC News.
During former President Joe Biden’s administration, the economy reached a peak inflation rate of 9% in June 2022, a significant increase from the 1.4% when he first took office. However, both Biden and Democrats tried to downplay the economic crisis throughout Biden’s four years in office, with the former president repeatedly touting his economic legacy despite Americans’ concerns about the cost of living.
On ABC’s “This Week,” co-host Jonathan Karl questioned Schiff about a Democratic representative being removed from the House Chamber on Tuesday while attempting to disrupt Trump’s speech. Highlighting an X post from Democratic Pennsylvania Senator John Fetterman, which called out the disruption as more harmful to the party, Karl asked if Fetterman had “a point.”

“Well, I think the lack of a coordinated response to the State of the Union was a mistake,” Schiff said. “Frankly, it took the focus off of where it should have been, which is on the fact that the president spoke for an hour and 40 minutes and had nothing to say about what he would do to bring down costs.”
Schiff went on to state how Trump’s speech did not offer Americans help to “afford a new home, pay the rent or afford health care or child care,” adding how Democrats need to keep their “focus” on the economy.
“They’re destroying the economy, and they’re making it harder and harder for Americans to afford things. That’s where we need to keep the focus,” Schiff added. “That’s why we lost the last election, because we weren’t laser-focused on the high cost of living, and what they’re doing now is just making it so much worse in the administration, and that’s really what we need to emphasize.”
During Trump’s joint address to Congress on Tuesday, Democrat Texas Rep. Al Green was booted from the chamber by Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson after the Democratic lawmaker repeatedly yelled at Trump just minutes into his speech. During the address, the president highlighted his administration’s early victories, as well as his plan to “unshackle” the economy.
During the Biden administration, Republicans attempted to warn fellow lawmakers about the state of the economy, but Biden’s White House repeatedly assured Americans it was growing under Biden despite lower-than-anticipated job creation, inflation, and record-setting immigration drying up opportunities. While some Democrats have admitted that their push for bad policies may have cost them the 2024 election to Republicans, others, like Democrat Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, have stated that voters just didn’t “realize how much” the party had done for them.
