Acting IRS Commissioner Quits In A Huff

Acting Commissioner of the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) Melanie Krause is reportedly resigning following a new agreement between the Treasury and Homeland Security departments to share tax data of undocumented immigrants with Homeland Security personnel.

Krause assumed her role as the IRS’ third leader since President Donald Trump’s inauguration, but she will leave her position through a deferred resignation program recently offered to agency employees, according to the Washington Post. This decision was reportedly influenced by the recent execution of an agreement that was signed by Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, allowing immigration authorities to access private taxpayer information.

Before becoming acting commissioner on Feb. 28, Krause served as the chief operations officer of the IRS. Krause prepares to exit the IRS by April 28, following the tax-filing deadline. (RELATED: Howard Lutnick Shares Trump’s Plan To Ax IRS And Shift Tax Burden To ‘Outsiders’)

“Melanie Krause has been leading the IRS through a time of extraordinary change. As we focus on IT modernization and re-organize the agency to better serve the taxpayer, we are also in the midst of breaking down data silos that for too long have stood in the way of identifying waste, fraud, and abuse and bringing criminals to justice,” a Treasury Department spokesperson told the Daily Caller News Foundation. “We believe these goals are critical to a more efficient government and safer country. We wish Melanie well on her next endeavor.”

The IRS began Trump’s sweeping reduction of its workforce in February by firing dozens of Denver employees, mostly probationary, across several divisions such as collections and tax compliance, reported Axios. These layoffs are part of Trump’s initiative, carried out through DOGE, to downsize the federal workforce and curb wasteful spending.

The White House did not immediately respond to the Daily Caller News Foundation’s request for comment.
