A happy Tax Day at last – IRS to cut workforce, ax civil rights office

The IRS has reportedly begun laying off employees only days out from Tax Day, setting American taxpayers up for what could be one of the happiest Tax Days in American history.

“The IRS has begun implementing a Reduction in Force (RIF) that will result in staffing cuts across multiple offices and job categories,” the agency wrote in an internal memo sent Friday.

“This action is being taken to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of the IRS in accordance with agency priorities,” the memo continued.

The agency’s Office of Civil Rights and Compliance will reportedly be the first office to face cuts.

“That office is set to lose 75% of its workforce through a reduction in force, and the remaining staff that does not separate by voluntary attrition will be absorbed into the Office of Chief Counsel to carry out its statutory responsibilities,” according to Government Executive.

The layoffs are expected to top 20,000, or nearly a quarter of the agency’s total workforce, according to The Washington Post.

A Treasury Department spokesperson added in a statement to the Post that the cuts “will be part of — and driven by — process improvements and technological innovations that will allow the IRS to collect revenue and serve taxpayers more effectively.”

The left is upset by all this because of reports that the government will likely raise less revenue — i.e., steal less of taxpayers’ money — because of understaffing.

“The downsizing has raised concerns among tax officials that the government could see a sharp drop in tax revenue this year as tax cheats see opportunities to take advantage of the diminished IRS,” the Post laments.

“Treasury Department and IRS officials last month projected that tax receipts would show a more than 10 percent decrease by the April 15 filing deadline, compared with the same period in 2024. … That would amount to more than $500 billion in lost federal revenue,” the lamentations continue.

The newest round of layoffs comes after 4,000 other IRS employees accepted a deferred resignation agreement earlier this year.

Recall when Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) boss Elon Musk sent out an email across the federal government offering a lavish  severance package to any government employee willing to voluntarily resign from their post.

After that, another 7,000 probationary IRS employees were laid off. These 7,000 have since been reinstated because of a court order, though acting IRS Commissioner Melanie Krause has slickly kept them on administrative leave.

“The federal government will pay about 7,000 IRS probationary employees, who were laid off less than a month ago, not to work while lawsuits over layoffs wind their way through the court system, the agency said … in an email,” according to the Journal of Accountancy.

“Acting IRS Commissioner Melanie Krause said in the email sent to all IRS employees that the probationary workers, who were laid off Feb. 20, would be reinstated and placed on administrative leave until further notice,” the reporting continued.

Responding to news of the IRS’s continued layoffs, many were quick to celebrate on social media.

As previously reported, the IRS went on a super hiring spree during former President Joe Biden’s tenure in office. Thanks to the $80 billion funneled to the agency via the Inflation Reduction Act, it was able to hire enough employees to boost its staff to over 100,000.

“Republicans have since clawed some of that money back and Trump has frozen much of the remaining amount,” Government Executive notes. “His administration is expected to slash as many as 20,000 jobs from the agency.”
